Do we need to handle the None case as well as mentioned in get_datset return values here https://collectd.org/documentation/manpages/collectd-python.5.shtml ?

TypesDB defines min and max values for metric. link

We could validate it before sending data to Sumo Logic, but I believe this is already done by plugins which generate that metric, so we can skip it.
