This may not be a valid course of action, I'll update this issue if I figure out anything conclusive

Is the idea here to migrate older salt data to a prefix format, and then remove the code that deals with it altogether? Sounds like it would save much of the code refactoring and testing in #360.

@ktschap yea that's the idea. I also realized after the fact that it would remove the need for a lot of the work in #360, yea

That said, it was reviewing #360 that gave me this idea at all!
